8/28/2006 It’s all starting up again… While the games are beginning, and football players, hoopsters, cross-country runners et al are starting their actual seasons, what we are seeing is the finished product of a process that literally goes year round. All sports now feature processes that require off-season programs that make the participants stronger, faster, and more capable. Football teams are built in the fall, but football players are built in the summer. The same with basketball, hockey, baseball, and all sports. When your sport is in-season, the workload isn’t necessarily any harder than it is in the off-season. In other words, by the time the actual game season starts, individuals and teams are not only ready to roll, they have hit the ground running. The moral of the story is that once again, sports are just like life. Most battles are won before you take the battlefield. Chance favors the prepared mind, and professionals know that they perform the way they prepare. Performance is in direct proportion to the amount of time, dedication and effort spent…off the field. For every radio show I’m a part of, I prepare incessantly. For a typical Lions post game show, I have 12 pages of notes, literally detailing every play. I don’t have to do that, but if I want to give 100% and maximize performance, I don’t want to leave anything to chance. What it boils down to is this…Today’s high school athlete now devotes more time in the off-season to their craft than ever before. If you’re human, you sometimes wonder, is it worth it? Life is a long journey and your efforts will pay off. Eventually all of you are going pro, even if it’s not in the world of sport. But one thing remains the same, you play the way you practice. The habits you’re learning now will provide returns for the rest of your life in everything you do. (c) 2006 Novi
