Second to None

7/17/06

As coaches Kellepourey, Kelp, and Schlueter ready their teams for the rigors of a tough fall season, we are once again reminded the Detroit is the best Sports City in America.

Four quality Major League organizations, and two Big-Ten teams right around the corner, and that’s just the beginning. This past season, the Boat Races graced the Detroit River, The TPC in Dearborn hosted some of the World’s Greatest golfers, the AAU basketball tournament continued, the Detroit Shock of the WNBA were in action, and even the World Champion Detroit Demolition of the Women’s Professional Football league was vying for their second Title in a row!

And it won’t be long until the Football Wildcats lace it up against Chelsea, renewing their annual rivalry in the all-day affair at Eastern Michigan.

High School sports continue to be the last bastion of the most ardent sports fan. The kids are there for the love of the game. They’re not being paid, there are no scholarships, and the family unit enjoys the un-mitigated open-ended entertainment and action on a weekly basis as our sons and daughters transition into adulthood.

Friday nights at Wildcat Football Stadium are a thing to behold, replete with Green and White fans, strong support from the local faithful, and an overflowing crowd. I will never forget the 8,000 fans that witnessed Number #2 ranked Novi defeat #1 Adrian for the District Championship back in November 2003.

Enjoy your summer as the greatest sports fans in America, and soon the prep ranks will be back in full force.

The kids love of the game is second to none. Then again, their supporters might love it even more.
