7/10/06 What do Chris Cagle Jr., Joshua Theis, Jon Stevens, and Travvon Jones all have in common? They all attend Novi-Catholic Central High School, and they’re all teammates on an AAU Basketball Squad that will compete against the Nation’s Best this week in the 15-and-under National Tournament. They’ll take the floor against the likes of Madut Bol, the son of former NBA Center Manute Bol, Glen Rice Jr., and Phil Pressey, whose father played for the Milwaukee Bucks alongside greats like Bob Lanier. They play for the Michigan Hoop Club and their head coach makes no bones about their chances as he clearly states, “they are in-it-to-win-it!” In addition to being Shamrock teammates, Cagle, Theis, Stevens and Jones are the only Oakland County residents among the 800+ athletes that are competing this week. They are a group of kids that play hard and understand the concept of team chemistry and getting your teammates involved, so anything can happen. At that very least, this preparation will be quite a gauntlet for a group that will take the floor together as members of their High School team this November. In fact, one of the challenges these young men face, has been the need to subsidize their own expenses. They don’t have any marquee sponsors like Nike and Reebok, so they are forced to pay for their own travel and equipment, yet another test they must face up to. They say that basketball teams are built in the fall, but basketball players are built in the summer. So, if they are required to submit an essay when school starts that would be entitled, ‘What I did with my Summer Vacation?’, these Novi- Catholic Central underclassmen should have quite a story to tell.
