Inspector Rousseau

When Steve Rousseau scored his game-winning 4th goal of the evening Friday night against Walled Lake Central to capture yet another Regional Championship for the Novi Hockey Wildcats, it further cemented their position as one of the absolute premier High School Athletic programs in the State.

In fact, it was symbolic… Symbolic of the fight, grit, and fortitude the entire team and coaching staff has shown since the Cats were born back in 1998.

Coach Phelps had to fight to get the program started, and he prevailed. It took (9) tries for the inaugural squad to capture their first victory, but they never gave up. After that they played above .500 for the rest of the season. Not a bad record for a first-year program in Hockey-rich Michigan.

Since then they’ve been a beast in the playoffs and they’ve taken on all comers during the regular season, including traveling over 10 hours on the road to play a great team on their home ice.

So when they found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-0 drubbing at home to KVC rival South Lyon, they did exactly what champions do. They turned a negative experience into a positive situation. They rolled their sleeves up and went back to work.

It’s easy to root for and get excited about Novi Wildcat Hockey... Even when they aren’t always victorious, they are winners. When they take the ice, they are winners. When they travel to opposing arenas, they are respected… as winners.

In his bio, Steve Rousseau commented that he “wanted to be productive, and win regionals.” It looks like he was 2-for-2 and he’d probably be the first to thank his teammates. The beauty of this team is that they never lose faith, and they never stop believing in themselves.

Henry Ford once said, “Whether or not you think you can, or you can’t…you’re probably right.”

As for me… I think they can.

Scratch that… I know they can…
