The Second Season

2/27/06

Take heart Novi Basket Ball fans… The second season is about to begin, and it’s right on your home floor.

The Novi HS performance Gym will be buzzing on Monday March 6th, as one of the most competitive, entertaining District tournaments will open play.

At 5:00pm Novi Catholic-Central (still haven’t gotten used to saying that), will square off against an undefeated Northville team and the game should be a dandy. Nay Sayers will be quick to dismiss Northville’s record on a perceived mediocre schedule, but I don’t buy that for one minute. All you can do is ask them to beat who they play, and they’ve done that in impressive fashion.

Meanwhile Catholic Central has fashioned a fine regular season record of their own, in one of the toughest conferences in the State.

The second game of the doubleheader that evening features the Novi Wildcats and another face-off against the always-competitive Canton Chiefs. In 2004, Coach Schluter’s Three-Peat Cats polished off Canton in District play, after defeating them earlier in the year as well.

Last year Canton got even, but it’s a whole new season.

For the first time in memory, the Novi Wildcats will finish the regular campaign under .500, but none of that matters when District Play starts.

Here is a chance for this team to finish the season on a high note. Should they prevail in their opener, they would face Plymouth on Wednesday, and would then most likely play Northville or CC for all the marbles on Friday night.

Districts are more about will than skill. It takes a mentally tough athlete and a disciplined team to perform when they know they are in a situation that is basically ‘one and done.’

Novi High School has a rich history of performing well under just such circumstances. In fact, when you consider the performance of many Wildcat teams, especially in this millennium, when it comes to District play, it’s as if they’re right at home…

For the out-going seniors, here’s a chance to make a statement. For the underclassmen, here’s a chance to build for next year.

For the fans, here’s a chance to enjoy some spirited high school basketball…

And there’s no place like home…
