Novi Hockey -
Past, Present
and Future

2/6/06

Scott Olson is a fixture at Novi High School Hockey games. He helps out behind the scenes with the penalty box, sound, PA Announcing, and scoring. Hockey is in his blood.

His father, Weldy Olson is an Olympic Gold Medallist. He was on the original ‘Miracle on Ice’ team in 1960 at Squaw Valley, and their underdog squad defeated powerhouses from Canada, the USSR, and Czechoslovakia. Weldy Olson was a forward on the US Gold Medal team and a key contributor.

Meanwhile on the current Novi High School hockey team, Senior Alex Malott is a part of a family that has earned 11 varsity letters, as his older siblings Travis and Garrett are part of the Novi Hockey family alumni as well. Hockey is in their blood.

Their grandfather is the great Bill Gadsby. The former NHL and Detroit Red Wing star was part of Stanley Cup Champion teams, and he’s a member of the Hockey Hall-of-Fame.

Meanwhile, the future of Novi hockey looks bright as well. Novi residents Matt Sorisho and Bryan Fegert already have outstanding achievements on their hockey resume.

They play for Victory Honda and even though they’re only grade-schoolers, their travels have already taken them internationally, and they’ve had some terrific thrills.

In early December, their team became Regional Silver Sticks Champions by defeating all-comers in a series of games played in St. Clair Shores. That round qualified them for the International Silver Sticks Games, held in Newmarket, Ontario.

Once again they were champions, by garnering a record of 4-0-1. Along the way they were defeating Canadian teams from Copper Cliff, Aurora, Waterloo, and the US Team from Kensington Valley.

From Olympic Gold Medallists, to Stanley Cup Champions, to the grade schoolers at Novi Woods and Parkview, the legacy of Novi Hockey looks solid.

Hockey… It’s in Novi’s blood…
