1/30/06 At a recent volleyball tournament at Novi HS, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team had an outstanding showing. After seven tough matches, they captured 2nd place, falling only to State ranked Marian HS. In no other sport would a team have to play (7) matches in a single day. To maintain composure, focus, and performance, leadership would be of paramount importance. Enter team captains Megan Miller, Brittany Stefanson, and Jenna Kuhn. All three are dedicated student-athletes, devoted to their sport, and experienced competitors. The dictionary defines ‘Captain’ as someone that leads, directs, and supervises. But in real life and in the heat of spirited battle, it’s much more than that… Last year’s squad reached the Regional Finals, which created artificial expectations for the 2006 team. For a trio of Captains that do their best to contribute on the floor as well as inspire their teammates, focusing on team goals while striving for individual excellence is always a challenge. Fortunately Megan, Brittany and Jenna all have 3-years of varsity experience, and they’ve all matured into floor leaders as well as valued teammates that the underclassmen can look up to. In Megan Miller’s case, she even oversees a sibling, as sister/teammate sophomore Hayley Miller is also a member of the group. Over a 9-hour day, facing (7) tough opponents, the Captains would have their hands full. Managing a winning streak can be as taxing as presiding over a losing streak. Keeping after teammates that become fatigued or distracted can be tough. And don’t forget these captains have homework and projects and grades to maintain just like everybody else. It’s a special person that can take a weekend, and devote their time and energies to worthwhile extracurricular activities while adopting a leadership role designed to maximize the performance of the Novi Wildcat family. Megan Miller, Brittany Stefanson, and Jenna Kuhn will garner valuable life lessons from this experience, and their teammates will do the same having been along for the ride. (c) 2006 Novi
