11/28/2005 With the MHSAA Football Championships in the books, the Girls State Championship Basketball tournament is still yet to be decided. While Coach Bill Kelp’s program has not yet matured to the point that they’re playing in the Final Four this week, they are making progress. With several experienced underclassmen making their way up the ranks, the team is poised to make a serious run in the very competitive KVC for 2006. Last year, the Lady Cats garnered their first District victory over cross-town rival Northville. This year, Novi opened District play against a gritty Plymouth team that came into the contest with a 17-4 record. Trailing by one with only a tick or so left on the clock, Amanda Diacono’s gutty length of the court pass enabled Rachele Folino the opportunity to hit two clutch free-throws, leading to a come from behind 33-32 victory. After disposing of South Lyon on Wednesday night, that set up the District Final against a veteran Canton team. The Novi Wildcats came oh-so-close to capturing their first ever District Title, and the now the writing is on the wall. In the tough KVC, a conference that featured other District Champions like Brighton and Pinckney, Novi has served noticed that they are ready to take it to the next level. After winning one District game in 2004, and two in 2005, they will win three in 2006 and advance to the Regionals. You heard it here first… (c) 2005 Novi
