10/17/2005 Does size really matter? If you’re intimidated by size it does. If you think bigger is better, then I guess it matters to you. If you equate size with talent, skill, guts, heart, then you can say that. But, you’d be wrong. Just ask the Milford Mavericks. On their first possession, coming up to the line of scrimmage, they looked bigger, larger, heavier and thicker than their counterparts. They looked taller, too. So, how did Novi win 38-14? Was it because 5’8” Adam Chandler continually made great plays? How about 5’8” David Carnegie with his speed, toughness, and hard-nosed play? Maybe it was 5’9” John Favorite, who pound for pound is one of the most solid football players you’ll find. Ask the Milford Mavericks if size matters. Their size netted them a 3 TD loss during a game in which they were out-hit, out-coached, out-smarted, and out-skilled. As I write this column, I am 3 hours removed the Detroit Lions / Carolina Panthers locker rooms. I am there every week. And when I see 5’9” Steve Smith walk by, I am further reminded that his size didn’t prevent him from an 80-yard TD Sunday. Or when I shake hands with 5’8” Dre Bly, I’m reminded that his size didn’t prevent him from getting to the NFL, making the Pro Bowl, or coming up with another great interception Sunday. How about last year's Super Bowl MVP? That would be Deion Branch of the New England Patriots. He’s 5’9” by the way. In fact there are 42 players in the NFL under 5’10” that start as DB’s. And don’t forget the greatest RB in Lions history, Barry Sanders… He’s a whopping 5’8”. Big props to the Novi Wildcats last Friday night. They played big and won huge. And that’s all that matters. Because if you are big, and you don’t play big, then what do you have? Maybe a little size, but not much else. If you think size still matters, ask the Milford Mavericks. They had plenty of size, but they sure didn’t come up big, did they? (c) 2005 Novi
