Last Friday, the 2005 State Champ Novi Girls Soccer team got their championship rings, and man… they are… off the hook!

Featuring Michigan’s Ms. Soccer, Kristi Timar, who’s now at Michigan State, they didn’t lose a single game the entire season.

And, as Coach O’Leary’s boys’ team is just getting their season underway, they too, are also undefeated. So, basically Novi Soccer has not lost a single game for the entire calendar year of 2005!

And, the boys’ team has a legitimate candidate for Mr. Soccer in Trey Love. As Yogi Berra would say, “It’s déjà vu all over again!”

Granted there’s a long way to go but the boys’ team is loaded with talent and they know how to win. Wouldn’t it be something if both teams won state championships, and both Mr. and Mrs. Soccer were Novi Wildcats?

The first time I met Trey Love, I said to him, “hey, are you Novi’s Freddy Adu?” We both laughed and I was really impressed with his demeanor. On the field, his athleticism is brilliant, as his foot skills, ability to defend, and capacity to make the right decisions consistently are very refined.

Off the field, he is humble and gracious, and I think he has a great future. I called him Freddy Adu, because when he’s in the game it’s hard to take your eyes off of him. But like most accomplished athletes, this All-State selection is all about his team, and the quest to help get them to the Promised Land.

A young man that’s not obsessed with personal statistics, Love’s primary role is to neutralize the opposing teams best offensive player, and he does it with such raw efficiency, it opens up plenty of other opportunities for his teammates.

It’s good to be a Soccer Wildcat in 2005.

It has a nice ring to it.
