He’ll Be Alright

where are they now?

When Brandon Langston was a senior at Northville HS, I went up and shook his hand and told him I thought he’d do great in college as a football player. “He’s too small,” people would tell me.

He’ll be alright, I would reply…Pound for pound, Langston is the best football player to ever come out of the Novi/Northville area. I saw those intangibles in him that I’ve seen in certain athletes, and he proved he had it.

As he enters his senior season for the #2 Nationally ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers, he had a great game in their 30-10 opening win over Ferris State. He caught 4 passes, rushed for 19 yards, averaged 29 yards per return on kickoffs, and scored a touchdown.

He’s also been a key part of a team that’s won two National titles in the last four years. Last season, he was an All-Great Lakes conference selection while catching 56 passes and scoring 11 touchdowns. In fact he scored touchdowns as a receiver, a running back, and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

All the while during his entire tenure in college. Langston knew his father was battling cancer.

It was a battle he would lose last fall, just prior to a game against Gannon University. Right before that game, his coach, Chuck Martin told him he didn’t have to play if he wasn’t up to it.

“I’ll be alright,” Langston replied. Later on that night, he scored 3 touchdowns in the first half alone, leading his team to victory.

Because of his speed, elusiveness, and game-breaking ability, he’s actually drawn comparisons to former Notre Dame All-American, and former Oakland Raider Raghib “Rocket” Ismael.

As for the future, it remains to be seen if the 5’9” 185 lb Langston will have a shot at the NFL. I still see the intangible in him the great ones have, and if given the chance, I think he could pull it off. As far as not being big enough? What would you rather have, Langston’s talent, or more height?

Regardless, whatever he does with the rest of his life… he’ll be alright.
