Football Fever -
Literally and Figuratively

8/22/2005

It’s that time of year again. The weatherman is calling for an 83-degree day. This is the part I’ve never understood. Attend a HS baseball game and freeze. Go to a football game in shorts…but that’s a whole different column.

The Oakland Press #7 ranked Novi Wildcats will take on the Chelsea Bulldogs in what has become a nice matchup, a nice rivalry, and a nice opener for two schools with outstanding football traditions.

Chelsea’s Brad Bush will field a team of 70 strong, which includes Lucas Daniels, a DB with a famous father by the name of Jeff. And his football skills are anything but dumb and dumber.

Meanwhile Tab Kellepourey’s Cats are already pre-season favorites to win a talented KVC against the likes of veteran Milford, always tough Brighton, and of course defending regional champ South Lyon.

But first things first…This opener will be a little different as the game will be played at Eastern Michigan University at 7:30pm, as part of a quadruple-header! The event is called “The Big Day Prep Showdown,” and it’s already drawing quite a buzz around the state. You can learn more by visiting this website.

This inaugural promotion, which was created by the Detroit Metro Sports Commission, is an offshoot of a model that’s been running in Cincinnati for the last 10 years, and it’s been quite successful. The Cincinnati event is now drawing 20,000 fans, while this one hopes to get 10,000 in its debut.

The Oakland Press has tabbed brothers David and Brandon Carnegie as part of their Super 75 players, and both should have fine seasons. Brandon made a sensational catch in the end zone against Chelsea last year to send the game into overtime, and he looks promising to become one of the finest Wide Receivers in the school’s history.

Meanwhile John Favorite and Alex Bartlett will anchor a stingy defense, one that will be in the mold of many former Wildcat squads that are noted for being talented and aggressive.

It’s hard to believe that football season is here again, but you won’t find me complaining.

…not even about the weather!
