In Memoriam…
and Memory

5/31/05

On this Memorial Day, as we individually and collectively thank and salute the brave soldiers that paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, I find myself contemplating other memories as we head into June 2005.

Thirty years ago in June I graduated from HS and I waved goodbye, for the most part to a group of young men that I’d grown up with. We fought together on the playing fields, we spent countless hours in locker rooms, team meetings, bus rides, and pretty much lived together when you add up how much time was truly invested.

Recently, I’ve received some terrific emails from around the world, literally from my HS football/baseball buddies. Come September, we will congregate for an informal reunion of sorts.

It’s amazing, even though you haven’t talked to some of these people in over 20 years, it’s as of you were never apart.

I think I heard recently the Senior Class of the ‘74/’75 Novi HS football team will be getting together as well. If they do, I’d like to know about it. For two years those guys fashioned a 14-3 record and pitched 5 shutouts.

I’ve heard Coach Osborne talk about the toughness and grit of the ’73 team, when they were juniors. Undefeated, they most likely would’ve gone to the Silverdome had that playoff scheme existed in those days.

I’ve received emails from some of those guys, and of course I count All-Stater Ron Buck as one of my friends.

I am grateful for the men and women that serve our country, as they fight for our freedoms…Freedom to participate in sports, to attend games as a fan, and to even reminisce with old teammates about how great we thought we were!

I look forward to seeing my old buddy’s in a couple of months, and although our lives have taken on other important things like families, jobs, raising kids, and keep your gut off, the common denominator, the commonality that lights the fire will be the memories of our conference championship football and baseball teams.

So, if anybody has any information about the ‘73/74, 74/75 (1975 Graduate) Wildcats and their football reunion, please let me know. I’d love to stop by and say hello.

Even though we’ve never met, once we get together I bet it will feel like we’ve always known each other.
