No Mercy

5/15/2005

The Novi women’s soccer team is having quite a season. They’ve had 5 mercies, they’ve outscored their opponents 89-6, the feature a 13-0-1 record, and goalie Kim Herbst has 11 shutouts.

Districts are just around the corner, and ironically, they’ve drawn Mercy HS as their first opponent. Mercy will put up a great fight, no doubt, but in the end the Cats will be too much…. Hold that thought!

In this millennium, Novi Wildcat football, basketball, baseball, and hockey teams have come so close to capturing State Championships, but so far the coveted state team championship has eluded the Wildcat family in this brand new century.

Tab Kellepourey’s football team was just 6-inches from the Dome, before losing to Brother Rice, a team they’d clearly outplayed that day.

Dan Phelps hockey team was a fixture in the frozen four, and who can forget the memorable 4-overtime game against Sault. Ste. Marie. It was the longest HS hockey game in Michigan history.

In 2000 Coach Rick Green fielded the finest baseball team in Novi history. AJ Rowes ‘stolen’ HR against CC changed the complexion of that quarterfinal matchup. Ironically, Hartland, a team that Novi had pounded twice during the regular season, made it Battle Creek.

And of course Pat Schluter’s hoopsters won 3 straight District Titles since 2000 and it took State Finalist West Bloomfield to knock them out in a last second thriller in the Regionals on their home floor!

Coincidentally, the last team State Championship, was Coach Brian O’Leary’s Soccer squad, as they captured that rarified air back in 1998, and 1999.

Players, if you’re reading this, please go no further, just keep working hard on the field!

Mom, Dad, brother, sister, fellow Novi students and fans, and of course Grandma, my message to you is this.

Novi Women’s Soccer is going all the way this year. As Reggie Jackson once said, “It ain’t braggin if you do it.” Let’s just say I have tremendous in faith in everyone from the college bound seniors to the 3 little freshmen.

Every time they take the field, they show no mercy.

It will be a fight, but in the end, the Cats will simply be too much…
