3/25/05 First, I think they’re going to be pretty good, again. Secondly, keep your eye on Kevin Cislo. He’s already committed to the University of Michigan on a baseball scholarship, and for good reason. But first, he has some unfinished business here in Novi… Cislo has a very quick bat as the result of a nice, efficient compact swing. He generates great bat speed, and hits the ball hard to all fields. He’s also a terrific bunter which will result in a lot of hits this season, as well as wreaking havoc on opponent’s defenses. He’s got a strong arm and his throws have excellent velocity and carry, and he’s extremely quick. His first step explosion will result in lots of stolen bases and he gets out of the box like a wild man. His first to third speed is tremendous as well. In other words, he is a legitimate five-tool player. But, I probably haven’t told you anything you don’t already know. As I said, I got to make some observations… Cislo is a leader. There is a bounce in his step with everything he does. After leading stretching and a pre-workout warm-up routine, Cislo hustled to his next station. He never walks, and he carries himself with authority. He also interacts extremely well with his coaches and fellow teammates. And, it looks to me like he embraces hard work. These are the things professional scouts notice. Scouts may appear to look like old curmudgeons, but in reality they know what it takes to be successful in baseball. The failure rate is high, and in addition to physical skills, a player must have certain ‘makeup’ to compete and survive through the tough times. In fact, scouts are watching a player when they least expect it. They form impressions based on the impression given. Body language screams, it never whispers. I was very impressed with Cislo’s skill level and tools. But, I was even more impressed with his physical attitude and workmanlike demeanor. I believe he’ll acclimate to college baseball quite successfully, and will most likely have an opportunity to sign a professional contract someday as well. But first he has unfinished business with the Novi Wildcats. I look for Kevin Cislo to have a stellar senior season on the diamond. That’s my observation, and I’m sticking to it. (c) 2005 Novi
