I hate to admit it, but baseball players are the biggest cheaters in any sport. For the last hundred years or so, they have employed virtually any means to get an edge. Stealing signs from the opposing team is very common. Doctoring baseballs, corking bats, watering down baselines and taking performance enhancing drugs have been around forever.

The recent steroid allegations are in fact passe...It has been an 'open secret' for at least 15 years. Even in the 60's and 70's, Pete Rose took 4-5 'greenies' during every game. Why do you think he sprinted to first base every time he walked?

But the party is about to end. There isn't going to be anymore preferential treatment for athletes, at least on the college level. Now I come to my point.

As we enter March Madness, RPI is a term you'll hear a lot. In short, its a simple score a team earns by their record and the quality/strength of their schedule. GPA is term you never seem to hear. That is a simple score that a student earns by their classroom academic record.

Enter APR......That is a simple score the NCAA devised that guages what percentage of student-athletes on the collegiate level are on pace to graduate. The most recent APR? ---was 25%! That means of all the student-athletes participating on the college level, 3 out of 4 are on pace----to not graduate!

Now the NCAA will institute regulations penalizing Universities and limiting scholarships if any institution fails to meet certain guidelines.

It should be noted that Novi athletes have done extremely well in the classroom, as well as on the athletic field. The good habits learned in high school should carry over nicely. But the NCAA is sending a message.

Preferential treatment for college athletes... is over.

There is no way around this one, no matter how hard one tries... to cheat.
