Winning isn’t
everything, 3/7/05 The final scoreboard may indicate a specific result, but it almost never tells the whole story. One could say that the high expectations for Novi Wildcat teams make them a victim of their own success, but only if you relegate winning vs. losing as a simple black/white analysis. The Novi Wildcats proved once again they are winners in every sense of the word, even though the hockey, basketball, and volleyball seasons came to an abrupt end last week. “I’m proud of the way our boys played,” Hockey coach Dan Phelps stated. “We accomplished some great things this year.” “Success comes from within, and if you look at where we finished versus where we started, we were successful because of the improvement and progress.” “No one even expected Novi to win the KVC this year,” basketball Coach Pat Schulter reminded. It’s tough to beat the same team 3 times in one year, but after falling to South Lyon in District Play, the Cat’s coaching staff was gracious and humble. With an 18-4 record, and an outstanding conference season, they can hold their heads high for all the right reasons. Meanwhile volleyball Coach Julie Fisette expressed her pride by emphasizing, “I’m proud of the way these girls pulled together,” signifying the importance of teamwork and giving your best effort even though there are no guarantees. People don’t remember the games that Vince Lombardi’s teams lost, but he’ll go down in history for the championships, great people, and great successes he produced. And for the record, no coach or team, has ever gone undefeated for an entire career. As for Coaches Phelps, Schulter, and Fisette, thank you for your efforts, and congratulations on your successes. But, most of all, kudos to all of you for your collective wisdom and insight. Your closing comments and perspectives are appropriate and heartfelt. In other words, there are no misunderstandings here… (c) 2005 Novi
