2/14/2005 The immense popularity of wrestling in this country was evident back in 1984, when 80,000 people jammed the Silverdome to witness “Wrestlemania.” And that event was staged! But even though people knew the antics of Hulk Hogan et al were fake, they still marveled at the athleticism, guts, and mano-a-mano aspect that wrestling offers. Novi High School hosts the Team District Wrestling Tournament this Thursday the 17th, and the action will be anything but fake. But, it will be just as exciting. The tension, emotion, and excitement at a wrestling match is a thing to behold, and the fact the Wildcats are hosting Farmington, North Farmington, and Northville, makes it even better. On Saturday, the Individual District competition will be at Walled Lake Western. Make the trip to support the Wildcat competitors. Novi Wrestling is not only on the map in the MSHAA, but is arguably one of the premier programs in the state. Over the years they’ve produced dozens of District, Regional, and State Champions, and their athletes have fared well in other sports as well. But wrestling in and of itself, is a test of will, character, athleticism, and courage. You don’t have to be a champion at all to get my respect as a wrestler. In fact, over 2000 years ago, wrestling was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. It’s one-on-one aspect makes for high drama in just about every match. There are no bats, clubs, rackets, or any implements for that matter. There are no teammates to block for you, and you can’t come out to take a breather. When the contest is over, both combatants are completely spent… and for good reason. In the ring there is nowhere to hide, and for the fans that see it in person this week, they’ll be treated to some great competition and some exciting entertainment. In fact the fans may be spent, too. And for all the right reasons…Like I said, there is nothing fake about this event. (c) 2005 Novi
