When it comes to capturing conference championships, building a reputation for greatness, or simply shooting for a winning record, there is one common denominator that all teams in all sports share…they have to be able to win on the road. Winning on the road separates the wannabes from the real McCoys. It separates the men from the boys. It separates the league leaders from the also-rans. It’s not easy to win on the road. Traveling is time-consuming and tiring. Venturing into unfamiliar surroundings is never the same as playing in your own backyard. Add to that the sometimes hostile nature of partisan crowds, and you almost have three strikes against you before the first puck is dropped, the ball is tipped, the coin is tossed, or the first pitch is thrown. But the Novi Wildcats have done it with such frequency they almost make it look easy. The calendar flipped to 2005 just the other day and Coach Phelps and his boys headed 10 hours north to face state Hockey powerhouses Calumet and Houghton. So what did they do? They won both games! 20 Hours and 1,000 miles on the road later, the Cats return home with two satisfying road victories. Meanwhile Coach Schluter’s basketballers traveled to Northville and Pinckney this week, and opened up 2005 with two important ‘road’ victories. Beating your crosstown rival on the road is always a treat, and when you follow it up with the 50-mile trek to Pinckney to beat the team you shared the KVC Title with, well let’s just say happy days are here again. Both teams head home this week for some more spirited KVC match-ups, and so far 2005 is looking grand, and they haven’t even been home yet. Honey I’m Home! Happy New Year… (c) 2005 Novi
