He was the Man

12/28/2004

Say hello to Matt Gorman, again. You remember him. I did just the other day, as he was cruising the mall with his brother Andrew and sister Melissa.

Matt now matriculates at Central Michigan University and is a member of the Varsity Football Team, he is characterized by his coaches as a young man; “that loves to play the game, and loves to hit people.”

He has paid his dues, and has been a part of the program for three years and he has a bright future. He has two full years of eligibility left, and I believe he’ll make the most of them. But it wasn’t that long ago that he was tearing it up as a Novi Wildcat on the gridiron and on the diamond.

He was Coach Kellepourey’s first QB and he helped to usher Novi football into this millennium. In 2000 and 2001 he led the Cats to the playoffs both years. His 99-yard TD run from scrimmage at South Lyon is a school record, and his outstanding performance against Portage Northern in District Play helped Coach K and the entire program earn the first playoff victory for the new regime. Those are just two brief highlights of many that eventually culminated in an appearance in the State All-Star game in August 2002.

For Coach Rick Green’s baseballers, he patrolled centerfield with the best of them, helping to lead the Wildcats to District Championships in his sophomore and junior seasons. His senior year, he was All- Oakland County.

At CMU he wears #20, while at Novi High School, he wore #10, but anyway you slice in the annals of Wildcat athletics, he is #1 in our hearts.

New for 2005: ‘Where are they now?’ Novi has been blessed with an abundance of athletes that have continued their efforts on the next level. Periodically, we will feature them in this column throughout the year.
