Where Else Would
You Rather Be?

12/7/2004
Now that the lull between fall and winter sports has closed and the new schedules are starting to emerge, I can honestly say I’m grateful. In fact I think Hall Of Fame Football Coach Marv Levy says it best in his new book. “Where else would you rather be?”

A Harvard graduate with a law degree, immediately after college he gravitated to his roots and his passions and took a job as a JV High School Football coach! But this is America, and it wasn’t long before he moved up the ranks, and became an assistant at places like William & Mary, Cal Berkeley, and even the Philadelphia Eagles.

Marv Levy is best known for being the head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, and of course losing (4) Super Bowls. But that’s like say Rocky is about some boxer. Levy is beyond erudite, and the positive impact he’s had on people’s lives over the years has been dramatic. How many NFL teams have gone to (4) Super Bowls in a row?

Once again, it was the world of sport that brought us Marv Levy. Sports put him on the map and allowed his God-Given talent to make everyone around him better.

I strongly recommend this book, not only for it’s inspiration and entertaining anecdotes, but also for it’s simplicity and the further validation that in the shopping mall of life, sports definitely signifies the toy department.

On January 26, 1991, Levy’s Buffalo Bills were in the locker room at Super Bowl XXV, getting ready to head out onto the playing field in front of the whole world, literally.

Levy, typically a strong communicator, usually had pre-game material prepared but on this day, the erstwhile JV Coach was overwhelmed by the entire scene as he looked out into the crowd and the incredible energy of the festive atmosphere… He was speechless!

He simply looked at his team and shouted, “Where else would you rather be?” “than right here, right now!”

Sporting events always give us that feeling. Last week I headed over to the Ice Arena, and as the Novi Wildcat Hockey team skated out for their warm-ups to cheers and loud music, I felt the same way.

Novi defeated Howell that evening, 2-1… Bring on the Winter Sports Season…

There’s no place I’d have rather been.
