Just for Kicks

I gotta wear shades”

There’s a an old saying, “you win some, you lose some…and some get rained out.” A brief variation of this axiom may have been prevalent this week for fans of Novi Soccer.

But, I believed the Cat’s served notice, again. As they compete for a KVC title, as fans we get to look ahead somewhat and speculate about the Livonia-Stevenson District, which starts a month from today.

Look for the talented Novi Wildcats to be a factor in both. As for last week, the Cats were impressive against Brighton, led by AW Stanek’s two goals as they defeated the tough Bulldogs 4-3.

After an uncharacteristic road loss to South Lyon, the Wildcats rebounded as they engaged in a stalemate against the #1 State Ranked Northville Mustangs. Although the final was 0-0, once again the Cat’s proved they can hang with anybody, anytime, anywhere.

Having to play 3 grueling games in a span of 5 days was a real test of Novi’s mettle, and it was a preview of potentially great things to come as this season is starting to take shape.

In addition to Seniors AJ Glubzinski, Neil Kocan, and Jason Sierra, the Wildcats also feature a very formidable group of underclassmen.

Juniors AW Stanek, Todd Janer, Matt Simpson, Marc Checcobilli, and Matt Crawford have been an integral part of Novi’s success, and they also form the core of the future.

But, first things first… A coveted KVC title is in the works and no one is working harder than Novi to bring it home. So much for a week in which they won one, lost one, and tied one. The record itself is insignificant, but the experience will serve as preparation for the next 6 weeks.

Somebody is going to end up as a State Champion, why not Novi? There is a lot of parity in the MHSAA this year, and no one will go undefeated, not even the Champs. So, I give the Cat’s their props, and the faith they might make something really big happen this year.

After all, these guys have a right to think big, because they play big…
