The Lightning Bowl of 2004 seems a distant memory now, but there is something worth noting. It has once again spawned a new winning streak.

In 2001, the Cats won 3 in a row following the Lightning Bowl at Brighton. And in 2002, the Novi Gridders won 6 of their next 7, including a District Championship after that season’s “Lightning Bowl.”

Is past prologue? We’ll soon find out, but this we know for sure. The Novi Wildcats now hold their fate in their own hands.

I look for them to take care of business at Lakeland Friday night, making them 3-1 heading into a KVC showdown with Brighton on September 24th. The Cats will host the Dawgs at the site of “Lightning Bowl 2002.” Brighton most likely will be sporting a 3-1 record as well.

The following week, the Cats will head to South Lyon for another KVC showdown, and since the Lions already have one loss as well, it’s conceivable that heading into October the Hometown Cats could be standing atop the Kensington Valley Conference by themselves.

Hold up; hold up, not so fast… I know. But I’m only a fan, I get to jump ahead, speculate and create what-if scenarios. I also get to envision the possibilities…Fans don’t have to take them “one at a time” or “leave it all out on the field.”

But we are allowed to have opinions. The win against Howell was huge. The Highlanders were 2-0. They came into town brimming with confidence. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead, and they were controlling the line of scrimmage.

A lesser team would have folded… Not the Cats. They took a couple of timeouts. They regrouped. They made adjustments. They scored 24 unanswered points. They played Novi Wildcat football. They established control.

Which brings me to my point. The Novi Wildcats are once again in control. They are right where they need to be. They don’t need any help from anyone. Their destiny is in their hands… All they need to do is take care of business.

One game at a time…
