8/30/04 “They” say lightening never strikes twice. “They” are right. In fact, lightening strikes 3 times! Take a quick stroll down memory lane with me. September 2001- Novi visits Brighton for a KVC showdown. The host “Bulldogs” strike first but Novi answers. The game settles in until lightening strikes, forcing postponement until the next day. The Bulldogs prevail, 21-7. September 2002- Novi hosts Brighton for another KVC showdown. The visiting “Bulldogs” are winless and are desperate for a win. Novi takes control early, until lightening strikes and the game is postponed the next day. An odd sequence of events continues, and the Bulldogs prevail on the road, 15-13. August 2004- Novi visits Chelsea for a season opener that promises to be challenging and exciting. The host “Bulldogs” tie that game 7-7 after Novi struck first, but again, lightening strikes and the game is postponed until Saturday. Once again, the dynamic changes completely and the Bulldogs end up on top with a 28-21 win in overtime. Are you kidding me? After watching, playing and being a fan of high school football for the better part of 30 years, I had never once seen a game postponed by lightening. Now, 3 times in 4 years? And, in each instance it happened against opponents named “Bulldogs!” And, in each case Novi ended up on the wrong side? Are you kidding me? Well, here’s one thing I’m not kidding about. As we continue our stroll down memory lane, you’ll remember that after the 2001 game, Novi responded with a winning streak and ended up playoff bound. In 2002, the Lightening Bowl spawned a 6-game winning streak and an eventual District Championship. Look for the Wildcats to win their next 3 games. Normally, I’m not big on Jimmy The Greek imitations, but in this case I’ll exercise my poetic license. I like the Cats chances a lot against the Pirates, the Highlanders, and the Eagles. They’ll be fired up, they’ll be ready. Just in time for Week 5…against the visiting “Bulldogs.” I don’t know if the skies will feature lightening that night, but the field will definitely feature some real fireworks. I don’t even want to think about the weather.
