Novi Dreamin

“We are the makers of music,
and dreamers of dreams”
  ~ Willy Wonka

8/2/04
This is the week the sons and daughters of Novi and everywhere begin to head off into the world of college and beyond. As they begin to pursue their dreams they might want to consider the story of Travis Hafner, a rising star for the Cleveland Indians.

As a senior in High School, his counselor asked him to list his #1 career choice. “Major League baseball player,” he stated. “What is your 2nd choice?” the counselor asked, fearing he was setting himself up for disappointment. My #2 choice is the same,” he said, “to make it to the Major Leagues.”

And so it continues…every day in the world of sports, and life, somebody’s dream comes true. That… is really where the 2004 graduates are heading this week, into the world of dreams.

The beauty of dreaming is simple…Much like enrolling in a frequent flyer program; it costs nothing, yet it can yield potentially great rewards.

After HS, Travis Hafner attended a Community College, and the following summer the Texas Rangers drafted him in the 31st round. The odds were against him, but Hafner was serious about his dream.

After toiling for seven years in the minor leagues and overcoming many obstacles, he made it to the Major Leagues and was promptly traded to Cleveland when the Rangers decided he didn’t have much of a future.

But he now finds himself hitting .340 and is the talk of the American League. Do dreams really come true? Just ask Travis Hafner.

As you pursue your dreams, many people will tell you to your face, and behind your back…you’re not good enough, you’re not big enough, you’re not this, you’re not that… and some people will listen to the negativity; Don’t you be one of them!

Investors laughed at Walt Disney, Elvis was told he couldn’t sing, and the founder of Federal Express was told by his college professor his idea would never work. Thank God, they didn’t listen. They only listened to their hearts and to the drumbeat of the dream that they wouldn’t be denied.

One final note about Travis Hafner… Perhaps his HS counselor asked for his #2 choice, because Hafner’s HS didn’t even have a baseball team!

So, to all Novi grads…I say so long, not goodbye, because we will be seeing you down the road.

Sweet Dreams…
