The Big Buck

The only sport I hate
worse than track… is field
  -Texas Longhorn Coach
Fred Akers, 1975

There was a simpler time, when athletes went from season to season, and their favorite sport was the one they were playing at the time. Even in college, multiple sport athletes would about. Football players ran track or even played baseball in the spring, much to the chagrin of high profile coaches that privately wished they could prepare year round.

Well, times are changing and the glass is half-full. In fact for the 3rd year in a row, the Novi Wildcats will have a representative in the prestigious MHSAA All-Star football game. Pitting, East vs. West, the game will be played this year on July 24th at 2:00pm at Michigan Stadium.

Following in the footsteps of Matt Gorman, Class of 2002, and Chase Chandler, Class of 2003, All-State linebacker Josh Buck has been selected, and this well-deserved honor should make for a great event and springboard into the future.

Gorman is entering his 3rd year at Central Michigan University, and should see quality time at Strong Safety this fall. Meanwhile Chase Chandler is establishing himself nicely as a Wide Receiver at Albion College.

After the All-star game, Josh Buck will turn his attention to Grand Valley State University, where he’ll matriculate as a freshman in September, and he also looks to continue his football exploits.

A solid 3-year starter and 4-year letterman, Josh Buck became synonymous with Novi Wildcat football, leading his team into the playoffs 3 straight years. As captain of some very stingy defenses, he was a key component in back-to-back District Champions, and led the Cats to a Regional Championship in 2004.

So, if you want to rekindle some fond memories of old 43 lacing it up one more time while adorning the Powercat Helmet, mark your calendar for Saturday July 24th. The Big House will be rocking as Michigan’s finest football High School talent will grace the field one last time.

And if nothing else, that will prime the pump; Only 4 weeks from the next Friday, the 04-05 Wildcats will head to Chelsea for the first game of the season!

Believe it or not! And of course as legendary Coach Fred Akers would say, “track fans are welcome too.”
