"But there were
trains to catch, 6/30/2004 And Sunday was perhaps the most magical moment I’ve witnessed… Prior to game time; there was a celebration of the ’84 World Champion Detroit Tigers complete with an 8-minute video montage of the season’s highlights. My eyes however, were not focused on the Big Screen. Instead, I looked at the faces and into the eyes of the players that had flown in from everywhere. Their expressions of wonderment and joy made them look like little boys as they watched the story unfold complete with commentary, music and key turning points in the season. Even though they knew they outcome, they were mesmerized, because they knew deep down that although 1984 was the year they were kings, it was the years preceding that, which got them to that plateau. Every athlete, no matter how great, faces many obstacles when trying to get to a higher level of achievement. And it’s the story of how they got there, that is so much more captivating than the end result. The days of uncertainty when they were faced with the slimmest of chances while displaying the biggest of hearts form the memories that make the world of sports so special. As we finally wave goodbye to the memories and stories to the Novi HS class of 2004, we welcome in the class of 2008, and the chance to see the Cats visit Chelsea on Aug. 27th as football season is just around the corner. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. In 20 years, we may not remember the final score, but I bet we’ll remember the stories that surrounded the quest for glory. Maybe that’s the reason Novi Athletics have fared so well in recent years. Parents supporting their kids at all costs, and making sure that is the top priority. Frankly, it’s made for some great stories, and there will be many more to come. That’s what it’s all about.
