Hardly a
Grand Blank…

6/21/04
Congratulations to the Northville Mustangs Girls Varsity Soccer team! They are well deserving State Champs after defeating Grand Blanc 3-1 Saturday.

And to those that followed the Novi Wildcat Girls Soccer team this year; it is worth noting they defeated both of those teams during the regular season!

Meanwhile, congratulations to Ann Arbor Pioneer for capturing the State Baseball Championship Saturday.

They defeated Northville in Regional action to advance to the quarter finals. The Novi Wildcat baseball team, also defeated Northville twice this season, although Northville did capture the District Title by defeating Salem.

And who can forget all the football heroics of last fall, as the 12-1 Cats fell inches short of the Silverdome, as Brother Rice advanced. Regional Champs in 03’, and District Champs in ’02, it took State Champ Catholic Central to eliminate them that year as well.

Meanwhile the Varsity Basketball team has been crowned District Champs 3 years in a row, and in ’03 they lost to West Bloomfield on their home floor in the last seconds. Meanwhile, West Bloomfield advance to the state finals.

And how about the domination of Novi Wildcat hockey the last couple of years? They have been a fixture to the Frozen Four, losing out only to eventual State Champions like Sault Ste. Marie and Grosse Pointe South, also a team they’d beaten in the regular season.

So, I guess if one was cynical, and they judged an athletic program by the number of State Championship banners hanging from the gym, one might say that Novi has fallen short. In fact, a cynic might say they’ve drawn a blank in that department. But, fortunately, we’re not cynical, nor are we that narrow-minded.

In fact Novi’s consistent competitive excellence is a tribute to the entire community. Coaches, parents, fans, and of course the on-going dedication of the kids themselves. Summer camps, off-season workout programs, and the commitment to constantly improve are things to behold. It has result in the Cats’ repeatedly knocking on the door, and it’s just a matter of time before Novi is waving a State Championship banner.

The world of sports is replete with examples of Hall-of-Fame representatives that never won a championship. And, to anyone that has, they would be the first to admit that there was at least a little bit of luck involved. The road to glory is fraught with speed bumps right and left, and you simply can’t control all the factors involved.

But you can control how you prepare, the effort you give, and the way you react when things go wrong. That’s why the Novi Wildcat achievements have been so significant over the last few years.

In the meantime, congratulations again to the Northville Mustangs for their great season! Hang your championship banner proudly!

And know this, the Wildcats aren’t going away anytime soon!
