Only a Game

“A Funny thing happened
on the way to the forum”

  -Stephen Sondheim

6/7/2004
My minor-league roommate, Michael Brauner is to this day, the quickest wit I’ve ever met. So, when Coach Whitey looked at him after one loss and said, “it’s only a game,” Michael replied with, “yeah coach, and the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.”

Friday night started out as a Novi sports fan’s dream. The huge crowd gathered as the #2 ranked Northville Mustangs hosted #1 ranked Novi for soccer bragging rights, a District title, and a legitimate stepping stone to a state title. But a funny thing happened if you were rooting for Novi. With just under a minute to go, Northville scored and took a 3-2 lead and that’s where it ended. Game. Set. Match.

So, when Saturday rolled around, I anticipated another epic Novi/ Northville baseball District championship tilt. The huge crowd gathered, the sun was shining, and Northville dispatched Canton 14-7 in the opening game. So, if Novi could handle Salem as they’d done previously this year, everything would be on track.

But, a funny thing happened for us Novi fans again. Salem refused to die. Their opportunistic hitting and base running, and their stellar pitching and defense resulted in an 8-3 victory over the more talented Cats.

So, there you have it. And when you add in the graduation ceremonies on Saturday evening, you realize the 2004 version of Wildcat athletics has come to a close. Game. Set. Match.

It would have been cool to have been able to continue attending soccer and baseball games for the next couple of weeks, following the road to the Promised Land and a coveted State Championship, but the fact we can’t doesn’t blemish a single prior accomplishment.

Let’s face it, we’ve all been spoiled and entertained immensely by this group and it wasn’t going to last forever. In the meantime, they’ve created lifetime memories for us as fans, and for themselves as they step into the playing field of life.

So, to that end, I don’t agree it’s only a game, it’s much more than that.

But, I wouldn’t dwell on the results of this past weekend too much. The fact is, it’s only one game, and you’ve all got many more ahead of you.

Game. Set. Match.
