4/25/04 So, why do players play? Is it the glory, the bling-bling, the fame, seeing your name in lights? Is it to please mommy and daddy? Perhaps you can get the pro-contract or scholarship they never got. Others see it as a way for achieving self-importance, or self-definition. Still, I choose to believe that most play for the love of the game. But for Pat Tillman, it was always above the sheer love of the game and the opportunity to compete. At 5’11” 200 pounds he was considered too small to perform at the college level. Don’t tell that to Arizona State fans as they will retire his #42 in a ceremony next fall. And, don’t tell that to the Arizona Cardinals, and their opponents as Outside LB Pat Tillman, all 5’11” of him wreaked havoc on the football field, earning NFL All-Pro honors and a multi-million dollar contract. But, Tillman’s courage and fortitude led to what he believed to be his highest calling, defending his country. He was deeply affected by the events of September 11th, 2001, and his competitiveness, dedication, and loyalty to country ultimately led to a decision that cost him his life at the tender age of 27. But his selfless action may have saved the lives of millions of others. In this open memo to Pat Tillman and legion of fans, it’s critical to emphasize that his death is not in vain. Because of his athletic achievements, Pat Tillman is a household name and he represents the other nameless/faceless soldiers that have also put their life on the line. Many life lessons he practiced were learned and honed on the football field. So to those that step into the arena looking for a little PT, take a minute to think about the PT that truly is larger than life. Including
me…Especially me.
