4/20/04 And, hardly anyone chews tobacco anymore! Touché. I dipped Skoal from Feb ’77, to Dec. ’02, and although they say it’s addicting, I don’t recall ever getting addicted! I guess seeds and gum are still popular, but you wouldn’t believe what Sonoma State shortstop Mike Boggs chews during games. The Cossack senior chews, get this, a McDonalds Cheeseburger during games! He keeps it in his back pocket and nibbles on it between innings, at bat, and while at his position. And, he considers it a good luck charm. A recent departure from this habit caused an 0-12 slump, and he literally dispatched his mom to the local drive-thru during a game and she tossed him a burger while he was in the on-deck circle. He plopped a chaw in his mouth, stepped up to the plate and promptly doubled, ending the slump! Boggs admits that while being recruited by Sonoma State, the fact their program had won three conference titles in recent years was a big plus, but the fact a local McDonalds was within walking distance was a bigger factor. Given Mike's success with this little idiosyncrasy, I don’t look for him to quit anytime soon. And granted, while chewing tobacco is bad for you, and I wouldn’t exactly say bubble or seeds are that great either, I would offer one final thought... Have you checked out
the fat grams on a Mickey D’s cheeseburger lately?
