Three-Pat!

3/13/2004
Back in 1987 and 1988 when Pat Riley’s LA Lakers were winning back-to-back championships, he not only guaranteed the Lakers would win a 3rd in a row, he actually filed a copyright on the word “three-peat.”

Well he didn’t have to worry about anyone stealing his idea because the 1989 Lakers did not win their 3rd in a row.

Enter the Novi Wildcats and their Coach Pat… After Friday’s exciting, heart-stopping game against their cross-town rival, the Northville Mustangs, the 2004 Novi Wildcats ran their record to 20-3, and they captured an amazing 3rd District Championship in a row!

I can’t claim to be an MSHAA historian, but the last time I think this happened was the Shane Battier led Country Day HS as they won 3 straight back in 1995-97. That’s pretty good company.

The Novi Wildcats captured their first District Title in 2002, as they defeated Livonia Stevenson on their home floor. They followed that up in 2003 by defeating Northville in double-overtime in South Lyon’s Gym.

But, the third straight District title is truly one for the ages. It looked like the Wildcats had it wrapped up in regulation, but the next thing you know they were in overtime and they trailed by three with time running out! Trevor Hoover’s 3-pointer at the buzzer, literally, forced a 2nd overtime, and this time the Wildcats stood Pat…. pun intended!

To those in attendance, I guarantee it’s a game no one will ever forget! And to those that have enjoyed the exploits of this exciting team, no one will ever forget what a storybook season this has become, and it’s not over!

Congratulations to Coach Pat Schluter and the entire team, 3 District Championships in a row puts them in rarified air, that I guarantee you!

Speaking of guarantees, whatever happened to that Pat Riley guy?
