2/7/04 “Well what if the champ wasn’t blindfolded?” his trainer deadpanned! I earlier stated the Novi Hockey team would be in the state finals this season, and since that prediction they’ve had a very rough go of it, barely managing to stay .500. But I’m not backing off my belief, not for a second. Championship caliber teams come from anywhere and everywhere and out of nowhere. How many of us predicted the Carolina Panthers would be in the Super Bowl this year? How about the amazing Florida Marlins in last years World Series? And for you BCS lovers, LSU was on nobody’s short list last August to win it all when College Football was just starting. Enter the Wildcats…The last 3 week stretch has been tougher on them than Howard Dean at a VFW convention. They’ve played #1 state ranked Brighton not once but twice. In addition they played #3 ranked Muskegon Mona-Shores, and #4 ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer. And did I forget to mention that last month they traveled north to Hockey heaven and locked horns with defending state champions Calumet and Hancock. Needless to say, they’ve kept fast company, and this is making them stronger, tougher, and more experienced. Add to this they’ve had more injuries than a MASH unit so other players have gained invaluable ice time which will serve to make the Wildcats deeper and more formidable come playoff time. By the time March 1st gets here and Regional Playdowns begin, the Cats will be healthy and ready, and they’ll start to peak like they always do in March. I’ve seen Coach Phelps and the boys do it before and they’ll do it again. They keep getting up no matter how many times they’re knocked down. That’s what championship caliber teams do, blindfolded or not…
