1/31/04 Mark your calendars for St. Valentines weekend… Friday the 13th, Novi hosts Howell, and Saturday night the Cats visit South Lyon and they’ll be looking to avenge two critical league losses. There’s an old story about a coach that was asked how he thought his team would do in the upcoming season. “We look good on paper,” he said, “too bad the games are actually decided on the field.” Or, in this case, the court. In my opinion South Lyon did Novi a favor, and they made an example out of us. They won by playing the game the way it should be played, even though the Wildcats in my view have more talent. But it was the Lions that looked like the more unified team. They distributed the ball evenly, they continually looked for the open man and they picked each other up on defense. They were scrappier and more determined, but most importantly they played intelligently. Novi did look cool though… And, if you’re listening to an Outkast song, you might say, “what’s cooler than bein’ cool” but that doesn’t always translate to winning basketball… Back to the Lions… Hey Ya… Their shot selection was better, they didn’t force unmakeable attempts so they could look cool, and they took advantage of their opportunities at the free-throw line, which was something the Wildcats struggled mightily with that evening. In October of ‘02 I wrote a column entitled, “A star may win you one game, but a team might win them all.” This group is athletic, talented, and is highly capable, and they could still make a lot of noise this season if they play within themselves, and do what’s best for the team, instead of trying to do things they’re not capable of doing anyway. Sometimes you learn from others mistakes, sometimes you learn from your own. Sometimes people never learn. Reality has a way of showing up in the boxscore. Of course, that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.
