12/14/03 How ironic it is… that the very thing the system was supposed to avoid ended up hitting a bullseye with such raw efficiency it might as well have come out of central casting. In other words, no one believes the final matchup featuring Oklahoma and LSU is the most representative of a National Championship decider. But, I guess it’s all how you look at it… For Oklahoma fans, even though they were drubbed 35-7 in front of God and everybody, they are still #1 in the BCS poll and will have a chance to redeem themselves in the Sugar Bowl. Meanwhile LSU fans can delight in watching their team leapfrog the previous #2 team just because Boise State beat Hawaii. Huh? That’s right. When Hawaii lost to Boise State at 3:07 am EST that fateful evening, it cost USC “value points” in their earlier victory over Hawaii, hence LSU moved passed them by the slightest of margins. Huh? Don’t ask me, see the folks in IT, maybe they can help. Now USC may have a real beef. But, look at the upshot. With Oklahoma losing, it took luster off the USC/OK matchup. I still believe USC would have beaten them but it wouldn’t have been as dramatic, as if Oklahoma had remained undefeated. Now, however, USC has garnered #1 rankings in both the coaches and AP polls, and their Rose Bowl contest vs. Michigan should be a beauty. Some folks feel Michigan is playing the best football in the nation, so should USC beat them convincingly, they’ll get their props. Michigan fans should be ecstatic since they will now play the team most feel is truly #1 in the country. Should Michigan win, they would put the capper on a great season by knocking off the top ranked team in 2 polls, even if they aren’t BCS polls. So, what’s everybody complaining about? As for me, I’ve got my spot marked out on the couch for both the Sugar and Rose Bowls, and I won’t miss a minute. Which is exactly what the BCS geniuses wanted anyway. No argument there…
