Valentines day. The day single people everywhere dread, the day they have nicknamed “single awareness day.” But is it really that big of a deal? It’s just another Hallmark Holiday that people have blown out of proportion to be this awful day that makes those without a loved one feel alone.

Every year, starting a couple of weeks before-hand, people start tweeting about not having a Valentine. They start making the forever alone jokes and say they’re going to be a cat lady when they grow up. People think they’re being original, but the reality is, it’s the same thing on every social networking site with the wording tweaked.

They might think they’re being funny, but no matter what they say, their goal is to get attention and to get that special someone they have their eyes on to get their butt up off the couch from where they’re obliviously playing video games and ask them to be their Valentine.

But let’s be honest, boys don’t care about Valentines Day. To them, it’s just another day where girls happen to be wearing a lot of pink and there are hearts everywhere. They aren’t going to go out of their way to make your day sweet if they don’t actually like you and if they did like you, chances are they would have already shown you in some way that doesn’t involve chalk-like candy hearts with cheesy sayings on them.

So instead of lamenting alone in your bed watching the Notebook on Netflix for the hundredth time with a box of chocolates you bought for yourself, go out with friends and have a good time. Celebrate being single - you might not have a significant other, but you’re definitely not alone.

And really, you’re in high school. Most of the world does not meet the person they’re going to marry in high school. You have the rest of your life to try to find a spouse - just because you don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend in high school doesn’t mean you’re doomed to be a hermit in a small cabin in the woods for the rest of your life.

There’s more to life than dating, believe it or not. The world won’t end if you’re single for yet another Valentines day. You’re only 17, you’ll have the rest of your life to be spoiled on Valentines Day.
