Seniors are already starting to fill out college apps. Freshman are worrying about what high school is really going to be like. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are cramming in that last bit of summer AP or IB homework that they waited until the last minute to do.
The first day of school is expected every year and yet it still comes as a shock once it comes. For freshman nervous about the first day of school, registration will be their first real glimpse at high school life. They can get their lockers, books and schedules and will be able to compare their schedules with each other to see if they have any classes together.
For all the seniors, registration will be one of the firsts of the many lasts they will encounter this year. Last registration. Last first day of school. Last year living at home with their parents.
It will be different and it should be. Get to know new people, make new friends, get back in touch with old friends, keep in touch with college friends, get your grades up, keep your grades up, don’t let your focus slip.
It seems like there’s so much to think about during the school year, but don’t make it all about grades.
Every year, it’s always ‘I need to do more extracurriculars and volunteer more‘ or ‘I’m really going to focus and get my grades up’ or ‘I need to get my act together,’ but after the first couple weeks of school the motivation to get it done wears off and you’re back where you were last year. This year should be the year to actually make it happen. There’s only four years of high school, four years to make the most of and spend time with the people who probably won’t be seen again after high school.
So make every day count. Don’t spend the beginning of the school year slacking off and only hanging out with friends or being a social recluse who studies all the time. Find a healthy balance between school, friends and extracurriculars and make it work for you. This is your time, have fun with it!
