Nothing is more powerful
than an idea
March 2012
"Nothing is more powerful than an idea."
That is the opening quote of the “Kony 2012” video
that has become viral all over the world, and it couldn’t be more
true.
Lately, Joseph Kony has been the world issue that
everyone has been talking about. I’ve been told countless times to
watch the 30 minute video detailing what exactly Kony is doing and
invited to almost as many Facebook groups or events.
When I first heard about it, I just brushed it
off, thinking it was just another one of those fads to try and see
how many people you could get to like a Facebook page. But when I
started hearing about it everywhere else, my curiosity was piqued
and I went home and watched the video - well most of it at least.
What I saw shocked me.
I had gotten the gist of what was going on from
what my friends had told me in passing, but I had never imagined it
would be as bad as it was.
Word travels fast and as soon as one person posted
the Kony video, ten others saw it and also posted it. My newsfeed on
Facebook was filled with talk of Kony, with everyone saying we
should get together and try to do something to help.
I’d heard students talking about doing a
fundraiser at school, as well as decorating Novi with posters on a
designated night, April 20. The goal of all of that is to raise
awareness about Kony and make sure everyone knows who he is so he
can be found before the US pulls out our funding.
Last Thursday when all the Juniors took the MME,
my friend and I were talking about Kony in the cafeteria and
immediately a couple other people joined in the conversation,
knowing exactly what we were talking about.
My friend wanted to contact the Invisible
Children, the charity collecting donations to help spread the word
through young people so she could try to have a fundraiser selling
bracelets at school.
A couple of months ago, the name Kony would have
no significance to the average persons, but now the name sparks
recognition in almost every mind.
Simply typing ‘Kony’ in on Google comes up with
33,600,000 results, which is about 14,000 more results than typing
in ‘scarf,’ a common word, comes up with.
Kony has spread like wildfire, with social
networking sites like Facebook, its no wonder everyone is now aware
of all the events happening in Africa. |
