PROMises

April 27, 2010

Prom is right around the corner, and to be honest, there really isn’t much to say. Prom is exciting and fun. Girls get to go shopping for shoes and dresses, Boys get to try and find the right color tie to match their date’s dress, Parents get to see their kids all dressed up and having fun, what could go wrong?

A lot of things could go wrong, if something happens that shouldn’t, like spilling something on your tux, or accidentally tearing the bottom of your dress because your sister stepped on it, having the wrong color corsage, or having your hair fall out right before pictures, what could be worse?

The worst thing that could happen on prom night is thinking only in the moment. When people only think in the moment they aren’t considering the consequences, and that could mean bad things in the future.

Not that thinking in the moment is always bad, sometimes it's good, but making the wrong decision thinking that it won’t hurt you later, could hurt you even more than you might realize.

Going to prom is a big deal, but your future after prom and after high school is way bigger. So before you go to prom, make your future-self, as well as you present-self, a promise. A promise not to do anything destructive, not to fall under the pressure that people might put you under, and make yourself a promise to have fun.

For seniors, this is your last prom, and maybe even your first, so you are definitely going to want to remember it; not for the mistakes you make, but for the awesome times you had.

So, be smart! Promise yourself not to do anything that will be destructive to yourself, as well as to the others around you, and most importantly… to future you. Think ahead of the moment, and have fun, in a safe way of course!
