Diversity:
Let’s Celebrate!
January 21, 2010
Compared to other schools,
Novi High School and the Novi Community School District are
very diverse. We have students and teachers of every skin
color, height, and ethnicity; and in Novi, diversity is not
just something that is noticed, it is celebrated.
Every year for the past few
years several students and teachers have worked together to
honor Martin Luther King, Jr. in our very own Fuerst
Auditorium, and this taking place just days ago reminds me
of the diversity within the classrooms at Novi High.
In other schools around our
area, from what I have seen at football games and other
events, there is usually one race or ethnicity that is in
the majority, but here in our school district there really
is not a majority race.
When I walk into a classroom,
whether it be in an elementary school or in our very own
high school, there are always people that are different from
one another, and we are friends with each other. It isn’t
like back in the “olden days” when people of one culture
didn’t talk to people of another.
Thanks in part of the great
Dr. King, we are able to be in schools with people from all
over the world, we are able to experience different cultures
as part of a language class, and because of the help of Dr.
King we are able to be who we are today, and be who we want
to be in the future.
Without the historic events
that took place many years ago, who knows what society would
be like today? Though I could go on and on about the
diversity in our lives and the way it helps us grow as
individuals, I must say that if things today were like they
were back then, I don’t think anyone’s life would be the way
it is today and we definitely wouldn’t have the
opportunities and learning experiences we do now.
So let’s not only acknowledge
the diversity we have, but let’s celebrate it!
p.s. - Let’s not forget about
the diversity and all the good that we can do when we band
together as one. Please be thoughtful towards the disaster
in Haiti, and help our Student Council raise money to help
others in need, as they would do for us if the situations
were reversed. |
