Ending One Year, Starting Another

December 16, 2009

While the month of December starts to come to an end and with school being out for almost 20 days, there is sure to be a new vibe going around. And for the students and staff at Novi High School, this means finals are fast approaching, but before exams and mass amounts of studying begin, the year of 2009 must end.

Although several things have changed since the year 2009 started nearly 365 days ago, closing out the year with more changes isn’t too much of a surprise for our high school.

One thing that changes a lot for us is the finalized schedule for the 2010-2011 school year and beyond. For those who don’t know what will be happening, we will be moving from the four block day we currently have to a six period day.

For this year’s seniors though, they will be heading off to college and have to make completely different decisions, but for the underclassmen that must endure the change, things are starting to become clearer.

With counselor meetings taking place before our holiday break, students must now start thinking about the coming school year along with the changes due to a major decision that has been made by the Novi Community School Board.

This School Board decision was made nearly a week ago, but it still breaking news to students, staff and parents all around the district. The choice was made in the last meeting to privatize our custodial staff, handing over the task to a company in Ohio. This company will force us to “lay-off” our current janitors, yet allowing them to reapply through the new company.

Though this doesn’t seem like it will change things around the schools, it really will because we have been going to the the same school for a number of years and have grown to know some of the custodians. If they don’t come back, they will be greatly missed. And though this change may seem like a bad idea to some, it is helping a lot with the budget cuts that have recently been made by the state. Also, because the state budget cuts, there are no longer late buses, which for some, makes staying for after-school activities very difficult.

To close out this note, I would just like to say, this new year with all these changes will still bring us good, so keep your head held high and hope for a good year to come.

Happy Holidays!
